What Makes Être Irregular
Être doesn't follow any conjugation group, so each tense has to be learned on its own:
- Present: six unrelated forms: suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont. Tu es and il est are pronounced the same.
- Imparfait stem ét-: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient. The endings are the regular imparfait endings.
- Futur and conditionnel stem ser-: je serai, je serais.
- Subjonctif: que je sois, que nous soyons. The imperative uses the same forms: sois, soyons, soyez.
- Participle: été, which never changes, so elle a été, never "elle est été."
In literature and history books you'll also see the passé simple: je fus, il fut, ils furent.
How to Use Être
Être describes identity, nationality, profession and characteristics: Je suis canadien, Elle est médecin, C'est facile. Note that French drops the article before a profession: il est professeur, not "il est un professeur."
It's also an auxiliary verb. Verbs of movement like aller, venir, partir and all reflexive verbs form the passé composé with être: Je suis allé, Elle s'est levée.
Être en train de + infinitive describes an action in progress: Je suis en train de manger (I'm eating right now).
Common Expressions With Être

| être en train de | to be in the middle of (doing) | Je suis en train de travailler. |
| être d'accord | to agree | Je suis d'accord avec toi. |
| être en retard / à l'heure | to be late / on time | Le train est en retard. |
| être sur le point de | to be about to | Il était sur le point de partir. |
| c'est-à-dire | that is to say | Demain, c'est-à-dire samedi. |
| être à | to belong to | Ce livre est à moi. |

Common Mistakes With Être
- "Je suis été" instead of j'ai été. Être takes avoir as its own auxiliary.
- Using être for age. French uses avoir: j'ai vingt ans, not "je suis vingt ans."
- Using être for feeling hot or cold. J'ai chaud means "I'm hot." "Je suis chaud" means something quite different.
- Adding un or une before a profession. Il est avocat, but c'est un avocat.
