Windows: On Windows, turn on Num Lock, hold Alt and type the four-digit code on the numeric keypad. Letters without an Alt code need that language's keyboard layout (Settings > Time & language > Language & region), or you can copy them from this page.
iPhone and Android: On iPhone and Android, press and hold the base letter, then slide to the accented version.
What the cedilla does
The cedilla turns a hard c (like k) into a soft c (like s) before a, o and u, where c would otherwise be hard. French garçon, ça and français; Portuguese açúcar and coração; Catalan plaça.
Albanian and Turkish use ç for a "ch" sound (Albanian çaj, Turkish çay, both "tea").
č (Czech, Croatian, Slovak) and ć (Polish, Croatian) are different letters: č is a hard "ch" and ć a softer one.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type ç on a keyboard?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0231 on the numeric keypad (0199 for Ç). On a Mac, press Option + C (Option + Shift + C for Ç). On a phone, press and hold c. Or click ç on this page and copy it.
Why is there no ç before e or i?
Because c is already soft before e and i (French ce, ici). The cedilla is only needed before a, o and u.
How do I type č or ć?
They have no Windows Alt code. Add the Czech, Croatian or Polish keyboard layout, press and hold C on a Mac or phone, or copy them from this page.
What is the hook under ç called?
It is a cedilla (cédille in French, cedilha in Portuguese).
