Mac: Press and hold a letter to pick an accent, or press Option + E (´), Option + ` (`), Option + I (^), Option + U (¨) or Option + N (~), let go, then type the letter.
Windows: Turn on Num Lock, hold Alt and type the four-digit code on the numeric keypad. Letters without an Alt code need that language's keyboard layout, or you can copy them from this page.
iPhone and Android: Press and hold the base letter, then slide to the accented version.

- ê (circumflex): French (forêt, fête) and Portuguese (você).
- ë (diaeresis): French (Noël), Dutch (België) and Albanian, where ë is its own letter.
Codes: é Alt+0233, è Alt+0232, ê Alt+0234, ë Alt+0235.

How do I type an e with an accent?
On Windows, hold Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad: Alt+0233 for é, Alt+0232 for è, Alt+0234 for ê and Alt+0235 for ë. They are different accents. é has an acute accent, è a grave accent, ê a circumflex and ë a diaeresis. In French, é is a closed “ay” sound, è and ê are an open “eh” sound, and ë means the vowel is pronounced separately from the one before it, as in Noël.
