Which o accent do you need?
Each accent on the o belongs to a different set of languages:
- ó: Spanish (canción, adiós), Portuguese (avó), Polish (ó sounds like u: góra), Czech and Catalan.
- ò: Italian (però, può) and Catalan.
- ô: French (hôtel, côte) and Portuguese (avô).
- ö: German (schön), Swedish (öl), Finnish and Hungarian.
- õ: Portuguese (lições, põe) and Estonian.
- ø: Danish and Norwegian (sø, øl). It is the Danish and Norwegian equivalent of Swedish ö.
avó or avô?
In Portuguese the accent can change the word: avó (open o) is "grandmother" and avô (closed o) is "grandfather". Together, grandparents are os avós.
