Which u accent do you need?
Each accent on the u belongs to a different set of languages:
- ú: Spanish (tú, música), Portuguese (açúcar), Czech (úterý) and Catalan.
- ù: French (où, "where") and Italian (più, giù).
- û: French (sûr, août).
- ü: German (über, Tschüss), Spanish (pingüino), Turkish and Catalan.
- ů: Czech (dům, kůň). The little ring is called a kroužek.
ü in German and Spanish
In German, ü is a vowel of its own, said with rounded lips like the French u (über, müde). It can be written ue when the letter isn't available.
In Spanish, ü only appears in güe and güi, to show the u is pronounced: pingüino, vergüenza, bilingüe.
